Task 1 - Session 6
Surely it would be better for passenger aircraft to have rear facing seats?
VOX POPULI:
Backward-facing seats are safer in airplanes, just as backward-facing baby seats are safer in cars.
There's a lot of psychological resistance to seats that face backwards. People might not want to fly on an airliner with seats arranged in this way. So airlines put the seats facing forwards.
Some military transports have seats that face backwards.
I prefer to sit with my back to the pilot, I feel a lot safer and def. more comfortable, my ankles don't swell as much.
A large percentage of people just don't feel good about facing backwards when travelling, and there aren't enough sick bags on board to cope with the consequences.
You may find it more comfortable to face backwards, but most people don't. It's natural to want to face the way you're going, whether you're in a car or on a bus, train, or plane.
Mind you, if cut price airlines have their way, we'll probably be sitting on hard wooden benches running the length of the aircraft before long, or standing up.
Rear-facing seats are safer; forward-facing passengers are seven times more likely to suffer injuries than aft-facing passengers, as demonstrated by the FAA.
Think of it: during an emergency landing situation, the body's energy of forward motion would be distributed by the seat back, rather then waist seat-belt. Many military transporters have aft-facing seats.
So why do commercial aircraft have forward facing seats? Simply because passengers are more comfortable with them; they are scared to fly backwards. Money is an issue as well - aft-facing seats require stronger and heavier seat backs and floor attachments.
I believe it's always been the case that people instinctively prefer to face the way they are going, mostly so they can see trouble coming, not that that is relevant in an aircraft nowadays. Thus aircraft seats have "always been that way" except in some military airlift operations where the passengers don't have any say in the matter . . . Yes, it's safer, I'm sure.
People like to face the way they are going, they are more comfortable that way and everyone has to face the same way or the sardine packing doesn't work.
The RAF/MoD aircraft I used to fly on had rear facing seats. The RAF wants its passengers to walk away from bad landings, at least as often as possible.
I suspect that forward facing seats are simply the traditional way of doing things.
If something goes wrong at 30,000 feet in the air, and that some seating arrangement, or seat cushion is going to save you is nothing more then the airline's mental brainwashing to make you think your safe. Bottom line, your going to die.
It's for comfort. When an airplane is flying, it is on a slight incline (about 3 deg). The incline would be about 7-10 deg during climb to altitude.. You would probably be adjusting yourself in the seat to keep from sliding toward the back of the airplane.
During a crash, the seat backs aren't strong enough to take the full body weight. Although in a crash, that would be a moot point.
During landings, the same issue. Pilots seem to go into a 'panic' stop on landing. All the stress from numerous landings would weaken the seat backs. The stresses isn't that great on takeoff.
I guess the biggest question is whether or not it all really matters. In the case of an airplane crash, most if not all people are going to die anyways.
Your Task for this week:
There is a feature article in a national newspaper criticizing the fact that the passenger seats face the "wrong way" in commercial aircraft.
You work for the PR department of 'IUP AIR'. Write a letter to the newspaper defending your airline's decision to continue using forward facing seats in your aircraft.
No more than ten sentences. No less than six.

Dear Mr Sykes,
Your article in ASEAN Magazine about "backward-facing seats" is nonsense. Our operation is based on general rules of International Airlines Regulation (IRA) and in that regulation, the regular seats are facing forward. The "backward-facing seats" caused uncomfortable for the passenger. It may cause the passenger feeling dizzy. I want you to revise your article immediately. Thank you very much.

Dear Ms. Yang,
The latest feature article posted in "The Informant" has caused a national stir on flight safety. I realize after reading the article that although these scientists mentioned in the article have questioned airline safety, they were incapable of reasoning the psychological aspect. Most passengers are all comfortable with facing the way they are going. If safety is the latest concern of the public, then newly designed safety belts would be a better solution. As a representative of IUP Airlines, I proudly announce our decision to keep the use of forward facing seats.
I'll be in touch if you wish to discuss a possible interview. I look forward to speaking with you.

Dear Ms Larter,
The features article in your newspaper about rear-facing seats has caused public inconvenience and distrust to flight service company. Your article has no strong evidences to prove that front-facing seats are dangerous for the passengers’ safety and it only leads our customers to the anxiety to have a flight.
IUP Air, especially, always puts passengers’ safety and convenience on the first place as our main priority. That is why IUP Air will keep on providing front-facing seats in our aircrafts for the sake of passengers’ satisfaction. IUP Air won’t provide any uncertainty to our customers. Because passengers obviously will be inconvenient and feeling unsafe if we change the seats direction based on that unproven yet test.
Thanks for your attention.

Responding to the article in the newspaper The Jogjakarta Post on Thursday, October 14, 2010 criticizing the fact that the passenger seats face the improper way in commercial aircraft, we as public relations director of IUP Air want to give the evaluation in this regard. It is not true that the seats faced the rear more to ensure the safety of passengers. This is proven by the existence of evidence of research data by Gadjah Mada University in 2008 which stated that 68% of victims of traffic accidents in general are passengers who sat faced the rear. Seats faced the rear also give less comfort rather than seats faced forward.
Based on the fact, IUP Air as one of the aircraft service providers will still continue using the forward facing seats in our aircraft for reasons of safety and comfort. Thank you.

Based on The Jakal Post article on October 14 2010 which had issued an article about rear-facing seat is safer than forward-facing seats arrangement, me as Public Relation of IUP Air confirm that we will not change the seats configuration because the passengers' pleasure is the most important thing beside safety aspect. Regarding the safety aspects, we have always been working on this with our utmost providing the best pilots, planes, and technicians. We have long surveyed the customers' desire and they wanted the most comfortable flight without ignoring safety aspects.
We consider your article could cause an anxiety to our customers. Furthermore, this article could cause customer distrust to use air transportation and could be damaging the flight industry. We are also pondering to post statement in your newspaper to clear this issue. We hope this arguable matter would end immediately.

Dear Sir,
We have read a feature article in your newspaper, Trans Post on Sunday, 17 October 2010, about improper position of passenger seats in commercial aircraft. Actually your article was very fascinating but we, IUP Airline, will never change the position of passenger seats in our airplanes. There are more than one reason why we don’t want to change the position but the most important one is about our passengers’ convenience. It doesn’t mean that passengers' safety is not our concern. We always improve our technology to ensure that all of our airplanes meet standards of safe flights. We think it’s enough to explain why commercial aircraft like us, IUP Airline, don’t change the position of our passenger seats.

I appreciate with your explanation of backward seat which is safer than the original forward seat. But most of our passenger will not yet excepting to this recommendation since they are more comfortable in the old fashion way. In our airline business we still preferring to maximize profit which is we must follow the customer's request.
Beside, although this kind of approach has been tested with simulation by scientists still it is not yet already tested by any airliner. We doubt that other airliner would follow this approach and will maintain the same way like ours. Our goal for our business is to make comfortable flight for our customer. Any issues related to safety is the responsibility of our aircraft engineering team and the pilot themselves. So in this case we prefer to have money expense allocated to the pilot and engineering team to maintain the aircraft safety rather than redesigning the aircraft seat .
Feel free to reply this message and I will posted to you again.

I do not agree with the statements in the article above. Passengers however prefer to front-facing seats because they know what will happen. Also that will prevent from getting sick (nausea). IUP airplanes already improve our belts to maximize its safety. That is our better way than to change the seats into back-facing which will make our passengers uncomfortable. Thank you.

Dear Mr. Edison,
Responding to the article of “The Fact that Passenger Seats Face the Wrong Way in Commercial Aircraft” in Jakarta Post newspaper, we are IUP Airlines as one of the biggest airlines in Indonesia want to reply those critics. We will not change the position of our aircraft seats. Based on the research that was done by a university in England, a large percentage of people don’t feel good about facing backwards when travelling. It’s natural to want to face the way you’re going, whether you are in a car, on a bus, train, or plane. If we provide seats facing backwards it will be a problem for people with air sickness. It also causes phobia for many people to travel by plane. Based on those psychology reasons, we will not change our aircraft seats position. We just want to make our passengers feel comfortable and safe flying with us. Thank you for your attention.

Dear Ms. Lady GaGa,
A feature article posted in the latest issue of 'The Paparazzi' was serious one, concerning about aircraft business. In this letter we, the 'IUP AIR', will voice our opinion this matter.
The appliance of rear facing seats might be a solution for increasing flight safety, but it fails interm of flight comfort. A radical change in seat positions would bring bad pychological effects for the passangers, proved by statements of people that find it uncomfortable and nausea-zing to travel facing the opposite way they are going. At the moment, we believe the new technology of seatbelt would net better results.
On that note, ‘IUP AIR’ declare that we will keep our forward facing seats. Thank you for your attention.

Dear Mr. Gianto,
Regarding the article “Rear Facing Seats in Commercial Aircraft” [Suara Merdeka, October 17, 2010]:
Although you have esteemed article about this issues on your newspaper, me as a Public Relation of IUP Airline, stated that we will not change our passenger seats in our airplane. Science Department of Gadjah Mada University already did some research with 40 people about this rear facing seats in 2008. Based on that research, 31 people experiencing nausea and uncomfortableness condition. We already held a survey too, with our customers; they preferred the forward facing seats rather than back facing seats. It’s not that we are carefree with our customer safety, but we consider that passenger’s pleasure is our first priority in our airline. Besides, we always improve a better services and technology for the standard safety flight.
We confidently stated that we will not change our passenger seats in our aircraft for the sake of passengers comfort. We request you to emend your article about this issue, because it might affect a huge misunderstanding with public’s perspective.

Responding to the article "Backward Facing Seats" in The Golkar Post on Monday, October 18, 2010, we appreciate your article about safety in flight. Yet, there is still not sufficient evidence. Facing forward seat, absolutely, is more comfortable than facing backward seat. Besides, comfortable is the main reason which plane will passengers choose. On the contrary, facing backward seat seems dangerous when the plane taking off.
Finally, we, IUP airline conclude that we will not change our aircraft seats position.

on that. but unfortunately, the changing of that system can't be realized in the simple ways. our costumer satisfactory is our priority. we can't change the seat because our passenger will be very uncomfortable. and for the case of emergency system, maybe it's dangerous for the passenger when it comes the plane to take off.
in the conclusion, we can't afford that system

Based on the article, there are some points that should be considered first before we even think of changin the direction of seats in an airplane. In this case, we should think first about the comfort of the passengers. Surely some passengers will not stay healthy through a "reversed-seat" flight. Airsick bag is much more needed, maybe. And there is no guarantee that a reversed seat may cause the level of victim in an airplane crash to decrease. And what about the process of changing the seats? Surely this is not an easy process to do. It takes lots of money, and also time. Not to mention the Government Regulation, too. That's why, in this case, the IUP AIR would like to keep using the front-faced seats instead of reversing them, for the comfort of passengers, and also considering many important factors.

Our main goal is costumer satisfactory and we can't redecorate the seat because the costumer may not comfortable. Responding to the article in Media Indonesia daily post on Wednesday, 20 October 2010 "Backward-facing seat in the commercial aircraft", we really appreciate it. As one of leading commercial aircraft, IUP air really consider about safety in flight, but not with change passengers seat into backward-facing. IUP air know it will decrease our passengers convenience, and it becomes main reason why we keep on front-facing seat. We already trust our safety with our expert aircraft engineers, and professional pilots. Moreover, we also always fulfill all safety standard regulated by the governments. Responding your article in The Sudaily Post that said if the passengers of airplanes who seat facing backward more safety than facing forward is totally wrong. We from IUP Air has a high require test to check the most safety and comfortable way for our passengers is with facing forward seat during the flight. Important factor why it is better to facing forward is by facing backward caused our passengers feel uncomfort, and can causing air sickness. This case can be more danger because imagine if all of the passengers get air sickness, there will be chaos in the airplane and this endangered the flight. I hope you can recheck your article and you can revise it for our together satisfaction. Thank you.

First of all, I would like to thank for all of public attention discussing rear facing seat of aircraft. Probably rear facing seat is safer than the common one. Since FAA regulation has no restriction to replace the front facing seat then we still prioritizing the comfortableness for all of passenger.
Please be advice that safety is the main aspect and not negotiable in our business. It is doubtlessly that our cabin is well-designed combining safety, comfortableness, and leisureliness. We are 5-star airline who has audited certificate that always follow regulation in providing service.
Thank you for kindness attention. We do hope IUP Air and Daily Ego can strive together for our customer.

Dear Mr Ken
I appreciated with your explanation which backward facing seats are safer in airplane. But most of IUP Air customer will not choose this recommendation and they prefer forward facing seats which is more comfortable.
For the safety issue of the backward issues. We doubt about this research because most of the airliner never heard about this research and there is no physical evidence and strong argument from this research. Most of airliner agree including IUP Air will not change the seat.
IUP Air have a good quality standard and we already achieved The Best Safety Airline Award in 2009. Safety is the most important in our business and we sure that forward facing seats will give more safety feelings to our customer.
Thank you

Gracious Mr. You-Know-Who,
I'm Mr. Adrian L.P. who is working for IUP Air under the public relation division. I've read about your articles regarding Reversed Seating which is the official terminology, truthfully I'm very surprised that you've made such articles regarding the matter.
This issue has been discussed and researched in detailed 13 years ago. We did 17 tests from landing procedures until accident controls regarding the Reversed Seating with random peoples taking part as volunteers. The result was that the passengers had a traumatic experience during those tests, much more than when they did the normal seating.
This psychological reaction leads to an after-affect of flight trauma. Not to mention that we published those researches and the aircraft committee around the world agrees to disregard the Reversed Seating method. That method has many disadvantages if it is deemed applicable such as negative psychological reaction, total changes of the aircraft design, reduced flight effectiveness & efficiency, and costly.
I hope this will enlighten your knowledge in regard to Reversed Seating method where you thought that it is a revolutionary seating method.
